Skin Rejuvenation and the Science of your Skin

Updated: Sep 24, 2024

Your skin has 3 main layers, the epidermis (top), the dermis (middle) and the hypo-dermis (bottom). At Skin Within I focus on treating both the epidermis and the dermis to achieve optimal rejuvenation, whatever your skin concern.

Epidermis

This is the most visible layer of the skin, its actually made up of five individual layers and is responsible for pigmentation (colour), guarding against harmful substances and skin renewal. The epidermis is constantly creating new skin cells ensuring our skin is renewed every 30 days in our 20’s. As you’ve probably guessed, this process slows down as we age and can take up to almost 3 months when we reach our 50’s.

So when I treat the epidermis, the main aim is to speed up cell renewal so you can regain that youthful glow, remove congestion (essential for those struggling with acne) and ensure hyperpigmentation is minimised.

At home you can treat the epidermis by using good quality products and having an effective skincare routine which aids in the desquamation process (ie exfoliates). Using a high factor spf to help it’s barrier function is also essential and should be part of your daily skincare routine.

In clinic I can take this to the next level and effectively speed up the cell renewal process. I use techniques such as hydro peeling with AHA & BHA acids, deep exfoliation using vibration tools and serums plus multiple techniques which encourage oxygen to the surface of the skin. All of these techniques increase cell metabolism. I then ensure that the skin is fully nourished and hydrated by using treatments such as ultrasound and skin heating to aid product infusion. The skin is then “sealed” using cooling techniques to ensure products are locked in and the skins defensive barrier is restored.

At Skin Within I use a combination of protocols including the HydrO2 facial which combines the face tightening benefits of radio frequency with hydropeel, exfoliation, oxygenation, Electro-ion, ultrasound and fire and ice.

Dermis

The dermis is where the magic happens, especially if you are concerned about ageing as this is where collagen and elastin are produced. Collagen is a protein that makes skin cells strong and resilient, elastin keeps skin flexible and helps stretched skin regain its shape.

As with skin renewal, the production of collagen and elastin declines as we age. In fact, by our mid to late 20’s collagen is already in decline and by 30 collagen loss is approximately 1% each year.

At home it’s important to start incorporating retinal into your skin care routine, eating a healthy diet with plenty of vitamin C and again, keep applying the SPF.

In clinic I treat the dermis in multiple ways but there is one common theme, each treatment stimulates the production of collagen and elastin ensuring your skin is working form the inside.

Collagen induction therapy, also know as micro needling is one of the most effective ways to stimulate new and healthy collagen. This treatment creates small, superficial wounds in the skin that trick the body into producing high levels of collagen to assist in the healing process. Mesotherapy serums can be used in conjunction with micro needling to tackle most skin concerns like pigmentation, dehydration, uneven texture, enlarged pores, acne scarring and ageing.

Micro needling with radio frequency is effectively the next level of collagen induction therapy. By adding radio-frequency energy into the mix, your skin effectively receives a mega-boost of collagen stimulation. Like micro needling, it’s a minimally invasive aesthetic procedure, fine needles are again used to create microscopic punctures on the skin‘s surface but also radio-frequency energy is then delivered through the needles to gently heat the dermis, prompting the body to produce new collagen and elastin. The image below illustrates how effective micro needling with radio frequency stimulates the collagen fibres ensuring they are more densely packed hence giving a plumper, more youthful appearing.

To compliment any micro needling treatment I always recommend an LED treatment to reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process. I recommend Dermalux at Skin Within which provides a non-invasive way to repair, revitalise and rejuvenate the skin. Using it is pain free, the visible effects are immediate and after just one session the skin is hydrated and irritation is calmed. It’s great for acne and blemishes and is the perfect compliment to any clinic treatment.

Radio frequency is also available as a stand alone treatment to help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin and is a great compliment to other Hydro2 treatments. The skin tightening benefits of this treatment are a favourite amongst many clients and celebrities and is known as the ultimate #fivestarfacial treatment.
